Cut Your Energy Bills by Up to £500 This Year — Here's Exactly How to Do It

📅 19 July 2026⏱️ 5 min read✍️ Terry the Turtle

Energy bills are still eating into family budgets across the UK. Terry the Turtle breaks down the simple steps you can take right now to pay less — no complicated jargon, just real money back in your pocket.

Let's be honest — energy bills have been a nightmare for UK households over the past few years. Even as wholesale prices have settled down a little, millions of families are still paying far more than they need to. The good news? There are real, practical things you can do right now to shrink that bill. I'm Terry the Turtle, TrueSaver's friendly financial expert, and I'm here to walk you through it step by step.

First Things First: Check Whether You're on a Fixed or Variable Tariff

Most households in the UK are currently on their energy supplier's Standard Variable Tariff (SVT) — which is essentially the default rate you get put on if you've never switched or your fixed deal has ended. The SVT moves up and down with Ofgem's Energy Price Cap, which is reviewed every three months. Right now, fixed tariffs from some suppliers are starting to creep back onto the market, and some of them are genuinely worth a look. A fixed deal gives you certainty — your unit rate won't change for the length of the deal, which makes budgeting so much easier. Log into your energy account or check your latest bill to find out which tariff you're on. This one step could save you hundreds of pounds.

Use a Comparison Site to Find a Cheaper Deal

Once you know what you're on, it's time to see if you can do better. Comparison sites make this really simple — you just pop in your postcode, your current supplier, and roughly how much energy you use, and they'll show you what else is out there. Don't be put off by switching — it's free, it takes about 15 minutes, and your supply is never actually cut off. Your new supplier handles the whole process. When you're comparing deals, look at the annual cost rather than just the unit rate, and check the exit fees if you're looking at a fixed deal. Some fixes come with penalties if you leave early, so make sure you're comfortable with the length of the contract before you sign up.

Reduce What You Use — Small Changes, Big Savings

Switching tariff is the biggest win, but reducing your actual usage is the gift that keeps on giving. You don't need to sit in the cold to cut costs — small, sensible changes really do add up. Turning your thermostat down by just one degree could save around £100 a year, according to the Energy Saving Trust. Washing clothes at 30 degrees instead of 60 uses significantly less electricity. Draught-proofing your doors and windows is cheap to do and makes a noticeable difference. If you haven't already, switching to LED bulbs throughout your home can save around £40 a year on its own. None of this requires suffering — it's just being a little smarter about how and when you use energy.

Check Every Benefit and Grant You're Entitled To

This is the bit people miss most often, and it really matters. There is a huge amount of support available for UK households — and too much of it goes unclaimed every year. The Warm Home Discount gives eligible households £150 off their electricity bill. The Winter Fuel Payment is available to older households. The Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) scheme means that if you're on certain benefits or have a low income, you could get insulation or even a new boiler completely free of charge. Check the government's website or speak to your local Citizens Advice to find out what you might be entitled to. Don't assume someone else has sorted this for you — take five minutes to check.

Terry's Top Tips

  • Submit a meter reading today — if your supplier is estimating your usage, you could be overpaying or building up a debt without realising it.
  • Set a reminder to check tariffs every 6 months — the energy market changes regularly and a deal that wasn't worth it six months ago might be brilliant now.
  • Don't ignore your direct debit — if your energy use has changed, ask your supplier to review your monthly payment so you're not overpaying and letting them sit on your money.
  • Consider a smart meter — it's free and helps you see exactly what you're spending in real time, which is one of the most powerful ways to change your habits.
  • Bundle your loyalty — some suppliers offer better rates or perks if you take both gas and electricity from them, so it's worth checking dual-fuel deals.

Energy bills don't have to feel out of your control. Whether it's switching to a cheaper tariff, claiming a grant you didn't know you were entitled to, or just making a few small changes around the home, every pound saved is a pound that stays with your family. At TrueSaver, we make it easy to compare energy deals and find the right tariff for your household in minutes. Click here to compare energy tariffs now and let's get your bills down together.
